Timeline Shots fired in the national capital


White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest says that the White House has offered assistance to Canadian officials in the wake of shooting in Ottawa.


Shortly before 10 a.m. – Journalists are among the first to report the sound of gunshots.
CTV’s Katie Simpson reports a soldier being shot at the War Memorial outside.
Members of Parliament tweet that they’re being told to lock themselves in offices. MP Gerry Byrne tweets that RCMP entered the area with “guns drawn” and “machine guns deployed.”
Spokesman Josh Earnest said President Barack Obama and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper spoke by phone to discuss the incident.
