Festival discounts and positive buyer sentiment propelled Dhanteras sales through the roof on Tuesday. The boom saw some companies and brands experiencing a mammoth 7-8 fold rise in retail sales when compared to the average daily volumes — which was being described by retailers as a record in recent years.
Hero Motor, the country's biggest two-wheeler maker, said retail sales on Dhanteras — a day considered auspicious for purchase of precious metals — zoomed to nearly 1.5 lakh units, compared to an average of around 18,000 units on a normal day. Same was the case with Hyundai's where retail sales shot up nearly 7 times to 8,100 units against the daily average of about 1,200 units.
"Compared to last Dhanteras, the volumes are up 19%. I can confidently say that the consumer is back in the market," said Rakesh Srivastava, senior VP at Hyundai India.
The Myth of Dhanavantri:
Another legend says, in the cosmic battle between the gods and the demons when both churned the ocean for ‘amrit’ or divine nectar, Dhanavantri – the physician of the gods and an incarnation of Vishnu – emerged carrying a pot of the elixir. So, according to this mythological tale, the word Dhanteras comes from the name Dhanavantri, the divine doctor.
